My wife has had a number of cedar planter boxes built for a raised bed vegetable garden. There are 17 cubic yards of space in these boxes, and, on the uphill side of each box, the depth is 2 to 3 feet; i am wondering what is an economical way to fill all this depth, rather than putting that much topsoil in the boxes.
I have over 2,000 square feet of space on my flat roof. The flat concrete rood in protected with a modified two ply system. I would like to build a raised bed system or square foot garden but I am having trouble figuring out what to use as a bottom. If I place the soil in the box without a bottom the soil will run off very quickly. Any suggestions for root top planting? I am sure there are many like me out there.
